After Leaving Colombia (2017)
Synopsis
After Margarita’s mother is imprisoned for a crime she did not commit, a lawyer attempts to prove her innocence. Soon after, a paramilitary group begins threatening the family. Forced to flee, Margarita and her family leave Colombia and seek refuge in Europe. In exile, Margarita must learn how to rebuild her life far from home.
Context
Produced for Red de Víctimas Colombianas por la Paz Latinoamérica y el Caribe, the series Memorias desde el exilio (Memories from Exile) documents the experiences of survivors of Colombia’s armed conflict who were forced to leave their country but remain politically active in the peacebuilding process. Through intimate interviews with Nélida, Jota, and Margarita, the project explores how exile shapes identity, activism, and the ongoing struggle to ensure that victims’ voices remain part of Colombia’s path toward peace.
