From my tiles (2017)

Synopsis
In 1990, Jota’s brother was assassinated by the Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad (DAS) due to his political activity as a member of the Juventudes Comunistas de Colombia (JUCO). Years later, after refusing an offer to avenge his death, Jota chose exile over violence and fled Colombia. Today, he lives in Ecuador as a refugee, selling newspapers and continuing his artistic practice—holding onto memory, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to peace.

Context
Produced for Red de Víctimas Colombianas por la Paz Latinoamérica y el Caribe, the series Memorias desde el exilio (Memories from Exile) documents the experiences of survivors of Colombia’s armed conflict who were forced to leave their country but remain politically active in the peacebuilding process. Through intimate interviews with Nélida, Jota, and Margarita, the project explores how exile shapes identity, activism, and the ongoing struggle to ensure that victims’ voices remain part of Colombia’s path toward peace.
