Mexico’s Crossroads

Mexico’s Crossroads is a short documentary film that was broadcast globally in 2014 by Al Jazeera as part of its documentary series Witness.

Mexico 2014

The inspiration for this film came from the work of Otilia Arellano, who dedicates her life to improving the lives of people working on Guadalajara’s streets. For many street workers, access to public services, stable employment, quality education, social security, and housing is nonexistent.

In 1998, with the support and guidance of local activists, Otilia founded the non-profit organization Friends of the Street and opened The Friends House.

In April 2013, we encountered the story of Alba, a single mother working at the crossroads. She had lost her husband the previous year and had recently arrived at The Friends House.

This film begins at the moment when Alba and Otilia’s paths cross. From there, we witness Alba’s pursuit of a better life for herself and her children, despite facing extraordinary challenges.
